For anyone who has successfully quit smoking.?

Question:
Ive been smoking for 4 years now, and Im ready to quit, but I cant. Im starting training to work at Sea World and I wont be able to do it if Im smoking. For anyone that has quit, and hasnt smoked since then, can you give me a few pointers and tips on how to quit successfully? thanks!

Answers:
If you've only been smoking for 4 years, you have a lot better chance at successfully quitting than someone smoking a lot longer.

You write, you are ready to quit but you can't. Have you tried?

You have a great motivator with the Sea World job. Use it. Realize that if you smoke, you can't work there. It's that simple. But it will still be hard.

If you are not smoking much (< 1/2 pack/day) you can try cold turkey. But you would probably be better off using the patch.

Don't cheat - don't allow yourself to cheat - don't fool yourself into thinking you can cheat.

Drink a lot of water. Do a lot of fast-paced walking. Eat raw carrots - lots of them (seriously, have you ever thought about smoking a cigarette after eating a carrot). The Arm & Hammer sugarless gum is excellent.

Again, you have the motivator - use it. Smoking is an addiction. Realize it is an addiction. Would you rather be an addict?, or work at Sea World?

The first several days will be close enough to hell that you don't want to ever go there again.

I quit 2-1/2 years ago - I started smoking in the late 1970's.

Let us know how you do.

The first 3 days are the worst. That's when the nicotine is leaving your body. Drink a lot of water. If you can just hold on for those first 3 days, you'll be fine. I also popped a piece of gum instead of a cigarette for a long time. Did that instead of eating because I didn't want to gain weight. Gum helped a lot. Still does if I get stressed. I smoked for 23 years and quit a year ago. Good luck and buy a lot of gum!
It'll be 20 years for me and I did it when my son came home from kindergarten and said, "Mommy, you're gonna die from cancer" I Iooked into those innocent blue eyes and realized I want to see him grow and get married and have children of his own....I put the last cigarette out at that moment and gave him the biggest hug ever! Cold turkey and willpower drawn off his growth has taken me this far and I will NEVER go back. P.S. He gets married this next June. Proud Mumma and walking tall!
The hardest part for me was convincing myself that I could quit. I taped hand written signs to my bathroom mirror Saying things like "I WILL quit" "I will NEVER smoke again". These were the first things I saw in the Morning when I woke up and the last things before I went to bed. I also talked to myself out loud. I spoke those same kind of strong unyielding statments (OUT LOUD & with CONFIDENCE). It's almost like I brainwashed myself so I BELIEVED that I could and would quit and there was no other choice. I also started working out about a month b4 I quit and this also helped me. It made me feel better about myself and made me want to quit all that much more. I think excercise is very important when trying to quit. Eat when you want to smoke but try to keep it healthy (apples, bannanas, cherries ect). If you eat fruits your less likely to gain weight. Hard candy works well too like jolly ranchers & peppermints U may put on a few pounds using this method but itsworth it to be smoke free. Always surround yourself with Non Smokers. This is very important the first 8 mos to a year. Don't think you can hang with smokers and not give in. You may be able to but why put yourself through the stress. Stay away from smokers. after the first week the smell of a smoker will probably be unappealing to you anyways. Recognize your triggers! if you smoke when you stress do something else, go for a walk, squeeze a squishy ball, stretch.... do whatever you want so long as you create a new reaction to those things that trigger you to smoke or avoid them alltogether if you can.
YOU gotta believe. I know you cqan quit because I'm no stronger than you and I quit. now YOU just gotta KNOW you can quit.
