Hi Woodenrainbow. Being overweight is fairly common in undiagnosed celiacs (which may be why it is undiagnosed in these patients).

After diagnosis and a successful change to a gluten-free diet, it is fairly common for patients to experience weight gain. As the gut heals, it begins to absorb more nutrients (and retain more because of the absence of diarrhea). Often, prior to diagnosis, celiac patients with diarrhea are eating much higher levels of calories than would be 'normal' to maintain their body weight. This is a result of the inadequate absorption of nutrients coupled with the rapid loss of nutrients via diarrhea.

So, one of the additional challenges with successful treatment of celiac disease is to decrease your food/caloric intake to a level that maintains your weight.

One more issue. In celiacs, an important gut hormone called CCK (Cholecystokinin) is reduced. CCK is important for a lot of digestive functions, but it also is one of the main hormones that controls your brain's response/perception of fullness (satiety). So CCK dysfunction from the disease interferes with your sense of fullness. Hopefully, as your gut heals, this potential problem will correct itself.

I am a celiac patient. I too fight the weight gain issue. I roughly estimate that prior to diagnosis I was eating at least 1000 more calories each day than would normally be required to maintain my weight. The frequent diarrhea was the source of this 'imbalance'. Now, a 'normal' caloric intake is 1000 fewer calories than I am used to. That represents a major calorie restricting new diet. Best wishes and good luck.
