How long does a knee replacement typically last?
Question:
Answers:
Currently they are getting about 15-25 years out of them depeding on your level of activity. The plastic meniscus that is inserted can be changed out easily, where as taking out the metal hardware is much more difficult. The plastic meniscus can just be slipped out and replaced if it is worn out, however in the less active/ elderly population who get their knees replaced in their late 70's you are probably not looking at the knee wearing out in their lifetime.

It's also very important to have regular xrays to check on the condition of the plastic. If it gets worn down, the metal implants wear on each other and get ground down. Then you have to have the WHOLE thing done all over, instead of just having the plastic replaced.
I just had both of my knees replaced at the same time on May 31. I'm only 40 years old but my knees were filled with arthritis and I had no cartilege left.
