What are the chances I will need a kidney transplant if both my parents have kidney disease?

Question:
My mother has had kidney problems since childhood, she went into kidney failure 4 yrs. ago and got a transplant last yr. Since then, she has no problems. My dad was recently diagnosed w/kidney failure. His Dr. says it is because 4 yrs. ago, he had septic, was in a coma for 3 months, and all of his organs shut down. He recovered from septic and now I guess this is like a side affect. Does anyone know what my chances are or any studies done on this topic??

Answers:
Depends on if the kidney disease was hereditary or not. You mom's is probably genetic but you dad's was probably brought on by another illness. Assuming your mom's disease is genetic, you probably have a 50% chance of needing a kidney transplant. My advice would be to check with your mom and find out what kind of kidney disease she had and ask a doctor if it's genetic or not.
