What are the chances I will need a kidney transplant if both my parents have kidney disease?

Question:
My mother has had kidney problems since childhood, she went into kidney failure 4 yrs. ago and got a transplant last yr. Since then, she has no problems. My dad was recently diagnosed w/kidney failure. His Dr. says it is because 4 yrs. ago, he had septic, was in a coma for 3 months, and all of his organs shut down. He recovered from septic and now I guess this is like a side affect. Does anyone know what my chances are or any studies done on this topic??

Answers:
There's no way anyone can answer that question for you. It all depends on what caused your parents kidney failure. If your dad had an infection, then that was most likely the cause and it may have not been due to any other underlying reason. But if there was a pre-existing condition, then that is a different story. What caused your mother's kidneys to fail? Many people's kidney fail, and they never know what caused it. My mother had kidney disease all my life. She died at 36. What she had wasn't hereditary. So there's no reason to think anything would be wrong with the kids' kidneys. Unless you know your parents' kidney failure was due to a certain hereditary disease, there is absolutely NO reason to worry you would have problems in the future. So don't worry.
