Does anyone have Tricare Prime?

Question:
For miltary spouses...I'm about to try to go to the doctor for the first time and I'm so confused about the insurance. Do I have to go to the base doctor if I live close to it, or can I go to a different doctor? Do I have to get a referral? I'm not really excited about using the base clinic, especially for female health issues...if anyone has any experience with this please let me know!

Answers:
As a spouse you get to go to your very own private doctor. Talk to the tricare office on post and sign up for a primary care physician. They have a list of names that you get to choose from. You get no other information other than names so I'd do some research first. Then, you call up and make an appointment. But no, you do not have to go to the base clinic. Though, you can if you want to, I believe.

Beware, if you're around Ft Hood go plenty early with lots of time to spare because the tricare office often sports a 2-3 hour wait just to make that choice.

Well i was in the military, I know my wife would not go on base for ANYTHING that had to do with medical. She had her own doc that took Tri Care Prime downtown and just made the appointments and showed the Tri Care insurance card.

Hope it helps.
