oh! mr_scayf said it already, that's exactly what my grandma told me to do.
Tylenol, chloraseptic spray or lozenges and gargle with warm salt water.
I gargle with warm salt water. I mix it in a glass and gargle as needed..
well it sounds like apple walnut's got it covered
Get some chloraseptic spray, then drink plenty of hot tea with honey, especially peppermint tea. Also, a tablespoon of lemon juice and honey mixed works well. Has also has cough drops that are Max Defense I think, big red box.they numb your throat well.
For adults, you can gargle with warm water that is super saturated with salt. Pour enough salt in to the glass so that after you stir it there is still salt on the bottom. Don't drink it or you will start vomiting very miserably. Salt can really make children sick and they won't like it. If you try to force them they will swallow it and puke all over your brand new carpet. They will still be puking while the pediatrician is yelling at you. Again, very seriously, not for children.
A way that tastes better is to sip a hot tea that has a lot of sugar or honey which can do the same thing as the salt. Salt and sugar both create an osmotic pressure that draws the swelling out of the throat. At least that's the theory. Ice cream/popsicles are a good source of carbohydrates but there is not enough water in them to keep you from dehydrating if that is all you can get down.

Diphenhydramine (sometimes referred to by a brand name "Benadryl" ) comes in a children's syrup. You can gargle with this, or better yet mix it half and half with an antacid to make it stay longer in your throat. If you swallow the diphenhydramine it may make you sleepy, don't exceed the amount on the bottle. It is an antihistamine that acts like xylocaine, the anesthetic used to numb things.

None of these methods last very long but can numb up your throat long enough to drink some fluids. If you are having a hard time getting out of bed, standing, controlling your fever or can't eat or drink it is past time to see the doctor. Even most doctors can't tell strep from a virus half the time so don't let your neighbor's girl friend tell you it's not strep.
Have Fun.
