Question: i have become more interested in the medical field after doing some hospital work (receptionist), and would like to know what it takes to be a doctor. ive heard you go to school for a long time. but i know you are an intern for a lot of years to. so is being an intern what takes up the most time? how long are you actually in college?

I got into medical school straight from secondary education. In Australia we do year 12 and then apply to universities.

These days, many people are applying to the medical post-graduate courses where you can get in if you have a degree already.

There were a few people doing a mature-entry course in Adelaide University, I seem to recall ...

Then it's 6 years of medical school for the traditional course, shrunk down to 4 years for the postgraduate course (seems to assume that post-grads are good at studying)

Then you do internship.

Internship is one year in Australia, although I understand it can be 2 years in some places overseas.

You work through a rotation of a medical term, a surgical term, some service positions (night shifts, emergency, relieving) and one other which could be paediatrics or OBGYN or psychiatry or whatever, depending on your hospital.

Being an intern is sort of like being a portable pen and sick-person detector. You follow the bosses around and write down what they say. Then you look after the patients once the bosses go off to do their stuff. You call them (or another senior doctor) if their patient is very sick. You try to fix the minor issues.

Assuming you are thought to be an okay sort of doctor, then they turn you loose.

You usually wind up doing jobs around the hospitals for a while until you settle on some form of further training and then train from 3-6 years more to get into the college of whatever specialty area you want.

I understand that in the USA, internships tend to be streamlined and head straight into the training programs.

You can be in college for a long time, depending on which specialty you want to enter. The GP's in Australia now train 3 years. Other specialties are at least 3 years, sometimes 5 or 6
