the hanging thing is your uvula. Do you think that you are seeing your tonsils? There should be one on each side and most people get them removed because the get infected easily.

The lump may be due to an infection - and you may have septic tonsils.
Go see a doctor - you may have to gargle with warm saline water and/or listerine to get rid of any pain/pus in teh swelling.

Sounds like a throatatic pregnancy where a rogue embryo with a lack of sense of direction goes up instead of down. Don't worry, it'll disappear naturally in 9 months.

Just in case it's not though, why not do the intelligent thing and go see a doc. You're obviously concerned about it and there are loads of intelligent idiots here who preach knowledge but know nothing or even less. Asking questions here is like going to Walmart and stopping people in the aisles and asking them to do a heart transplant on you. I've tried it and it wasn't a success. I had to ask 4 people before I found a heart surgeon, but unfortunately he couldn't do it at that time as he had to get to McDonalds to perform an emergency colonic irrigation.
I believe that is your tonsil you might have tonsilitis this is very common most people will have there tonsils removed sometime in there life kids get it all the time [like chicken pox] ..
if its white with pus pockets you probably have strep throat which is contagious my best advice is go to the doctor in the meantime
gargle with salt water and listerine several times daily dont spread germs like coughing kissing and so on and dont smoke
dont try to figure this out on your own go to the doctor tomorrow and take care of whatever it is before it gets worse
