I suffer from insomnia. How does one deal with this?
Question:
Answers:
Welcome to the club... Don't exercise late in the day, stop drinking caffeine by 3:00 p.m. if possible, practice good "sleep hygiene" by which they mean to make a nightly routine (brush teeth, wash face, read, etc.) to signal your body it is time for sleep. Keep lighting soft or low in evening hours, avoid bright computer screens and TV's. (Yeah, right! I know.... anyway)... If you get in bed and can not fall asleep, get out of bed and do something relaxing until you are sleepy again. If all else fails, talk to your doctor about a temporary sleep aid.
One thing that worked best for me was a "sleep cd" or a relaxation cd. Hemi-sync worked for me... Good luck!

Go to your doctor and get some prescription sleeping pills.
I am way too tired to help, I am going to bed.
No caffeine, little stress, exercise, no prescriptions, no uppers, no anxiety, peaceful thoughts, nothing on the mind, masturbation, reading
good luck
get more exercise and chew soem ballarian root
i don't even know if that's the spelling...
regular sleeping pills are fine.. or nyquil and a shot of any liquor, read a book, watch the history channel, get off the computer is a start
i have had that all my life you get use to it ...every sleeping pill i ever got from a doc made me feel worse the next day than i would have with no sleep
If you cant sleep then dont even make an effort to do so...Try to work hard all day and all night and eventually you will just pass out. Heavy drinking can help, as well as sleep aids like valium and xanax.
Get away from the computer.

i hope u sleep better after checking this out.. nighty nite :)
Not by sitting in front of the computer asking questions or maybe that's the answer.
Join the club sweetheart. My lack of sleep is stress related. I just left my husband and he is already in a serious relationship with a girl 10 years younger than him. It's hard to cope... Sometimes I go on long walks. Meditation helps, I wouldn't recommend pills, but my sister takes seroquil and it helps her. Relaxing music is good. Jack Johnson is an excellent artist, the album in between dreams always helps me loll off to dream land. Get a third shift job, thats what I did. I wish you luck, hun.
It could just be stress, maybe you've got a lot on your mind. I go through bouts of insomnia when I'm under a lot of stress. Things you can do to help insomnia.
No caffeine after 3:00pm.
Exercise regularly, but not within two hours of going to bed.
No nicotine within three hours of going to bed. Better yet, no nicotine at all.
Maintain a healthy diet.
Condition your mind that your bedroom is for sleep. Don't watch TV, read, use your computer, etc. in your bedroom (I'm not sure how well this works, its just something that I've read).
Drink a caffeine-free tea like Chamomile in the evening. These teas will help you relax.
Supplements like melatonin are supposed to help with sleep, I've never used them before though.
By insomnia what do you mean, often people say they have insomnia but still manage to fall asleep around 4-6am...someone who truly has insomnia can go days without sleep...ether way you need to go see a Dr. they will be able to help you better then anyone here.
go to a doc & get ya some sleeping pills & then take them!
Tell your doctor you don't sleep well and ask for an "overnight sleep study." that'll tell you both whether it is insomnia or a more serious condition masquerading as insomnia!
Some say you should not try to force yourself to sleep or to become agitated over the fact that you can't sleep, because your body will fall asleep when it feels like it.
There are people who sleep very little, but they feel that's enough for them. If you feel tired and sleepy, and you cannot sleep, then there must be something in your subconciousness that's keeping you awake. In that case, try to talk with a professional. Going to your GP won't help, because he'll probably give you some sleeping pills, which will cure the consequence (and create addiction), but which will not cure the cause of your insomnia.
Try good sleep hygine which consists of never doing anything in your bed except sleeping and having sex, going to bed at the same time every night, exercising every day (but before an hour before you go to bed), trying to follow a routine every night, and if you can't sleep after 15 min get up and read or do something so you don't lay in bed for a long time awake.
First make sure this is the correct diagnosis. If you've been seen by a doctor he should be able to point you in the right direction. I have been diagnosed, and I take prescription medication called vistiril. Their are no morning hangovers, and it is not habit forming. If you don't like this idea maybe you should think about lightening up your load because you may be stressed out.
Just a few questions ahead of yours was a similar question. See my answer to it (number 31) at this link:

Sleep well.
Insomnia can be dealt with in numerous ways. I have experienced this problem in my life and have done some reasding about it and also seen a few doctors. I think this information will give you some choices. I suggest you read them and decide what is the best thing for you. Only you know how bad the insomnia is.
Insomni Suggestions:
1.) Do not be on the computer or in front of the tv for many hours before you go to sleep. Being in front of the computer for long hours and right before sleep will disturb you.
2.) No caffeine drinks after noon. Or no caffeine at all if you can deal with it. If not limit caffeine drinks to 2 before noon.
3.) Drink chamomile tea or lemon balm tea after dinner. Put some honey in it and a touch of lem juice to make it taste good.
4.) Exercise in the morning such as jogging for 30 minutes 3 times per week helps.
5.) Is something bothering you? What is it? Do you hate your job? Do you get along with you family members(wife, husband)? Is there anything that is causing you so much stress in your life that you runinate about it when you sleep?
This is the important and difficult one to solve. If you can find out if there is something really troubling you and make some changes or accept the trouble you can perhaps sleep better.
6.) Go to bed before 10:30 pm. Get up and go to bed at the same time everyday. The sleep schedule is important.
7.) Don't eat heavy food before bed. After dinner you should not eat heavy things and food that is difficult to digest.
8,) Acohol before bed causes sleep disturbance
9.) You can buy valerian root from an herbalist or valerian pills like Relaxol. Try this 45 minutes before you sleep. You can double the dosage of what it says because valerian is harmless. It smells bad and the taste is not good but you get used to it.
10.) Finally you may need to go to a doctor and explain your trouble. If nothing else works there is xanax, rivatril, ativan and other benzodiazepine medication that you take 45 min. before sleep. The problem is if you use it every day for many weeks you can become addicted. And also if you use it everyday then you get a tolerance.
Good luck and I hope that you will sleep better. You can also try yoga and look into Ayurveda. Ayurvedic living can help.
Best Wishes,
Ouros
