What are some signs that my 10 year old daughter is getting close to starting her period?

Question:

Answers:
Budding breasts are a good sign. My daughter started at 13, and she also had a growth spurt (height) the year before she started. Now is a good time to get her her own menses "kit" with pads and stuff. Also, there's a VERY funny book out there, called "Vinny's Period Book" or some such. It's hilarious. Always good to laugh about life changes with your kids, if you can. They love it and it breaks the tension.

I'm sure you remember yours. Think about it.

Cramping, bloating, stomach ache, moodyness, PMS.
She says "Give me my allowance..NOW!"
It really depends on when her mother first had her period.
If you can talk to her about it, she will surely tell you when it happens. My daughter was 10 when she started hers, I just had talked with her, and given her a starter kit (a few pads, and book about it). She felt comfortable enough to talk to me when it happened, and wasn't freaked out, because she knew what was going on.
breast buds, body odor, thicker darker hair on her legs, slight widening of the hips, weight gain, maybe a little pimple or two, mood swings, increased appetite
I'd be considering if she has gone into puberty -- hair growth, need to use deodorant and other developmental signs.

There is a great book I use with my daughter, the Care and Keeping of You by the American Girl company. It's an awesome book covering health and nutrition. It gives girls (and moms) great info on menarche and other developmental issues.

Good luck -- I know I need it!
