Answers:
Pain receptors in and under the skin are specialized neurons that send electrical signals to the spinal cord when skin is damaged. Neurotransmitters in the spine send the signals on to other neurons, which send electrical signals to the brain, which interprets the signals as pain.

Salt in a wound creates more ions around the pain receptors in your skin and more electrical signals are sent than would be if there was no salt.
