It could be an infection and Mast cells are releasing histamine into the area (histamine causes swelling of cells). I would advise a stop into the doctors office though. Without seeing him I wouldn't be able to diagnose him, and no one else will be able to either.
That can happen through tons of different ways. Esophogeal cancer, severe acid reflux, esophogeal varicies due to portal hypertension, etc. These are all chonic problems that took years and years to develop into an enclosed esophagus. There is another rare condition that could cause it, called Achalasia, where the lower esophogeal sphincter has an inability to dilate, due to loss of the enteric nervous system in the esophagus, or an absence of the dilatory neurotransmitter such as VIP or NO. This is not a congenital disease, it is acquired, but would result in a lot of vomiting.
