Should I go on acutane?

Question:
I have acne that's fairly bad, and nothing else I've been tring has been working. Is acutane a good idea, or is it too toxic and damaging to be worth it?

Answers:
i'd say accutane should be a last resort. if you enjoy being out in the sun, you will no longer be able to be in the sun as accutane can have some reactions with the sun (blotching, itching, etc). also, if you are a woman and planning on getting pregnant, accutane is a known teratogenic agent (one that causes birth defects to fetuses). so it is a rather dangerous drug - it works VERY well, but can cause some problems down the road. try other things first (erythromycin with benzoyl peroxide is a good start. it is a topical cream that contains erythromycin (an antibiotic agent made to kill the bacteria causing your acne) with benzoyl peroxide (which is found in things like clearasil and oxy). it goes by the trade name Benzamycin. it is alot less harmful than accutane and a good place to start if youre looking for acne treatments - tal kto your doctor.

Other Answers:
I would say try it. I used it and it worked. But the side effects were worse than the Acne. Tetrocyclin worked well for me but you have to avoid the sun.

I don't think acutane is a good idea because it affects your fertility later on.
Try proactive, it might work for you
GOOD LUCK!

it should be a last resort, closely monitored by the dermatologist, can have serious side effects, but was the only thing that worked for me.i was lucky and had no side effects, and the severe acne (and now scarring) was socially devastating in h.s. and early college..the doc put me on it when everything else failed, proactive wasn't around so i can't compare them
