If you knew you'd end up homeless & penniless b/c of it, why use that street drug for the 1st time?

Question:
Surely EVERYBODY knows that you can be hooked after just 1 hit of meth, crack or heroin, and that your life progresses to a life of crime, homelessness, unhappiness and brain damage. We buy it from criminals (hoping it isn't rat poison or worse) knowing that it might ruin our lives if it doesn't kill us outright.

Why on earth do we need a WAR on drugs when the drugs' repercussions themselves should be enough of a deterrant?

Is life so bad for so many, that we need to escape it at such dire consequence to ourselves?

Answers:
I don't know why people do it. I've had friends get into stuff and the only explanation they've ever been able to give me is that it makes them feel better for a little bit. It's the whole instant gratification thing, I guess.

Other Answers:
Because we all think it won't happen to us until it does. It isn't about quality of life. Drugs are equal opportunity life destroyers. It usually is the quickest point between A & B to deal with life or think you are having fun. It's rather sad actually. But we humans do enjoy feeling good. Unfortunately for many it is there last time feeling good.
