How can I do brain research in a rural area hospital?

Question:
Hi,
I live in eastern KY in a rural area. I'm a high school student too. I would like to help do brain research at a hospital but I don't know how I would be able to. Any suggestions?

Answers:
I would suggest trying to find a larger facility that is relatively close to you. If there aren't any, then you need to find out the location closest to you that does brain research, MRIs, and other medical tests that you are interested in observing.

It sounds like you might have the most trouble actually FINDING the location, but there are a lot of options for you once you do. You can ask and call around and talk to people to find a facility that will work.

After that, contact the hospital or clinic and find out specifics about observation and what they allow. Also, I would first see if there is a website that you can look at so you get a feel for what you might see. There are plenty of websites that will explain things to you ahead of time about specific tests and all sorts of things. You also might get an e-mail address so you can contact them in that way.

Places do things differently. I have "shadowed" in a doctor's office and in a hospital. For the hospital, I found there to be a lot more rules and have had to do some volunteer training sessions. I just got to go around with the doctor when I was in the office, however. You need to find out specifics for the particular location.

Good luck!

Other Answers:
I'm not a researcher but only a university student. My suggestion to your question is just observe your subject/subjects, if they could respond to a questionnaire or paper works give them for them to answer. If you could interview all these people you want to observe, why not? Talk to them to know more about the information you needed, but make sure you are polite to them, so that there would be good communication between you and your subject.
