actually the cyaine pepper in pepper does the work. it causes the membranes in the throught to slam shut and immediate closure of the eyes.
Constant interduction of water, such as through a garden hose is an excellent cure for someone who has been sprayed.
I've spayed probably 2 dozen (inmates) people in my life (I'm a defensive-tactics instructor& have sprayed an additional 100-150 correction officers in my tenure.
I have aslo sprayed inmates who have major histories of mental illnesses, some of those, have been IN-effective.
Overall it is much better than chemical mace, as it works instant and requires very little cleanup afterwards.

yes, it really works. Not as good as mace, but it will usualy blind someone for a few secons, long enough for you to run to where people are and get help.

I was once the victim of an unprovoked assault in a bar by an intoxicated guy. As I was defending my face from the attack was blasted by pepper from the bartender who soaked both of us. It was quite unpleasant, superficially painful really. I got to a sink and washed thoroughly.

He wound up with a fractured skull and jaw and an arrest on multiple assault charges. Oh yeah, and possession of a controlled substance. I was OK an hour and a few beers later.
Yes it works. Sometimes if someone is coming at you and you yell that you have pepper spray they will back off before you even have to use it.
