Why do people ask such stupid questions?

It also answers itself . .
Your question is actually kind of stupid. BUT, it's legitimate because you're curious. You want to know the reasons behind the things that you cannot see into. For instance, someone in China might think it's stupid for you to ask why the toilets aren't the same as in America . . but you haven't ever been exposed to that, so you wouldn't know, although it is fairly basic knowledge. On a smaller scale, staying in the same country where differences like that aren't as profound, it's harder to understand why people ask some of the most ridiculously minute questions. Simply put, though, they probably have just not been exposed to that certain type of situation they are asking about and want to know from the other side of the road what it's like. Tell me you have never asked a question where the 5 people around you didn't start saying things like "You've never heard of that? You don't know what that is?", etc. etc. To some groups of people, a question may be basic knowledge and, kind of stupid. But if you don't know it's probably because you grew up differently, weren't exposed to the same things or something like that.
But, there's truth to the saying "there's no such thing as a stupid question". If you ask a question seemingly stupid, for whatever reason (maybe you honestly didn't know something that everyone else does, or possibly you just had a moment of blank confusion), at least you are seeking out that knowledge. The problem with the world today is that many of us don't expand our horizons. We judge others, we expect everyone to think that what we do is what everyone else should do and when something foreign confuses us, we're afraid to get to know it . . either for fear of looking "stupid" or out of indignance. But I say we salute those who ask stupid questions, not because they know so little but because at least they are trying to learn more about whatever it is they do not know or understand. I think it is more commendable to see a person who is not-so-enlightened at least grasp for more knowledge than to see a person who knows vast amounts of information but isn't open to any other kind of information or understanding it.
Which kind of brings me to another reason why people might actually ask "stupid" questions in the first place. Many people are lazy. They have found information that has gotten them to a certain place they are content with, and they are too lazy to find any other information on their own. So they run to someone for a one-minute answer rather than trying to really find out some intriguing info. Although for those "stupid" questions, there may not be a whole lot of bulk to the answer. Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn't I suppose, but the fact of the matter is: Someone asked a question obviously because they wanted to know. Whether this is their form of researching and trying to find answers or they were just too lazy to find it out themselves with a quick search, who knows. But at leat they are gaining new knowledge and are open to that criticism of their own current knowledge! I think we should all let our guards down a bit and learn about something we don't know, no matter how "stupid". You never know, you might be able to put your common knowledge to use one day. Either way, becoming a diversely knowledgeable society as a whole is something we should strive for anyway.
Thanks for reading this long answer, if anyone really has. Just my philosophy on why people ask stupid questions. Keep in mind, this is directed to people who really ask the question and aren't doing it for kicks. You know, like the kid who wants to know "why can't I be rich" or "why can't I wear a size small shirt when I'm 300 lbs and 6 ft. tall?" Anyway, you get the point.

Yeah, I know.
This is a dumb question, since you know the answer already. ;)
People can be stupid, and their questions reflect that.
Because they don't have a life.
wel its the curiousity within them that lets them release as what people call a 'stupid question'. It could also be the urge just to clear their doubt!
The same reason you asked that stupid question!
Runs in the family - got stupid parents.
Are their such things as stupid ?s or stupid people
In other words, they're stupid
What's stupid to you might be important to someone else.
Some people may just do it for points out of natural competitiveness.
Others may do it because they are bored or honestly curious.
That's a good question, but I will state the obvious, that maybe this is in fact a stupid question in itself. I apologize for saying that as I have asked my self this question over and over while looking at some of the really asinine things people say, but to put the question out like this to the "unwashed" as it were, may be inviting an avalanche of really stupid answers. Let's wait and see, shall we. Once again, I am sorry and I am not calling you stupid.
And you would have to be the 400th person to ask that question.
I was beginning to wonder the same thing. I can only surmise that these are a bunch of dumb teenagers with nothing better to do. I've been looking for a decent question for days but have come to the conclusion it's not going to happen. maybe yahoo needs to break up the questioners into age groups. This gets tiresome.
so people can answer it and gain points
It's called trolling. They try to get people upset about something stupid and most of us respond. They just get their kicks of PLAYING stupid.
For my own personal entertainment. Where else is someone going to ask me if whales have armpits?
I think mostly that it comes from boredom, and wanting to see how people react. A person that asks What are good side dishes when cooking kittens? is just looking for a reaction. I think it is funny that so many people give serious answers to silly questions.
cause its the middle of the night
because they want attention
