How long for a biood clot to dissolve?

Question:
I had a knee replacement operation and got a blood clot. How long will it take for it to dissolve. I am taking coumadin.

Answers:
"This handout contains information about the anticoagulant medication warfarin (Coumadin). An anticoagulant helps your body control how fast your blood clots; therefore, it prevents clots from forming inside your arteries, veins or heart during certain medical conditions.

If you have a blood clot, an anticoagulant may prevent the clot from getting larger. It also may prevent a piece of the clot from breaking off and traveling to your lungs, brain or heart. The anticoagulant medication does not dissolve the blood clot. With time, however, this clot may dissolve on its own."

Wow. I dropped my motorcycle and had a pretty big clot on my calf. The dr. didn't prescribe anything, but told me to put heat and pressure on it. I think it dissolved in a couple weeks.

it can take months. but once you are on coumadin usually you have to be on it for quite some time. some patients have to be on it for years. You will start out having routine protime cks about every two weeks then once it stabilizes it will be once a month some even get to every two months. I wouldnt be expecting to get off the med any time soon
