your belly button is basically just a big scar from when the umbilical cord fell off, so it's not a smooth, solid layer of skin like everywhere else on your body. because of this, it is possible to tear the tissue there. it would probably take a pointy object or quite a bit of force for anything to happen to your belly button, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Your own kneecap is a safe item to place in your navel. Try it.

I don't recommend shoving things into your bellybutton..
