It's a physical addiction!
Vicodin is a pain killer and, like many narcotics, the chance for physical and mental addiction is very high and you need to increase the dosage for that feeling that you want.
Well, I've never been addicted, but I was prescribed too much once. Before I got really sick, I had absolutely no pain and was feeling slightly light-headed, very relaxed and easy-going. So, maybe your friend is addicted to that feeling. Also, some things can cause you to be chemically dependent and it has a lot less to do with conscious choice.
Makes you numb and you pretty much pass out. Or at least I did. I dunno.
Vicodin is a painkiller, and it makes people calm. When abused, it tricks the mind into a false sense of wellbeing, and eventually, as with any painkiller addiction, addicts feel that without the drug, they are in too much pain to function normally.

Does your friend need the pain medication? Some people do suffer from pain and need a pain killer to relieve the symptoms so they can have some quality of life, unfortunately in the process they can become addicted. If the person is in pain encourage them to try alternative things to help relieve the symptoms of pain, like physical therapy, Chiropractic, massage, exercises, stretching etc..this may help to at least cut down on the meds. If it's just for pleasure encourage him to see a doctor and get help. The withdrawls can be vicious and shouldn't be done cold turkey.
It's an opiate & so is herione. It's very addictive & it destroys lives.
