To properly answer this question I would need to know what type of arthritis you have. So instead I'll try to give you an example for two of the most common ones.
Osteo-arthritis: The best way to describe this form is that it's basically plain old 'wear and tear'. As for a mechanical example you could use a door joint that has been opened and closed a whole lot of time but with a lot of weight on it. After a while the metal just gets used up. In a nut shell that's what happens to the cartilage in the 'load bearing' articulations (knees & hips are the most common). Over time the cartillage just gets thinner and eventually wears out.
Rheumatoid Arthitis: This is an autoimmune disease. So a little more complicated. But in order to sort of understand what happens to the joints I'll make a comparison but it's not exactly true to the nature of the disease. In R.A. the articulations are under attack from it's own immune system. This degrades the cartillage and bones causing the pain and deformations. You could compare this to a hinge that's rusting away because someone keeps throwing salt and water on it.
Hope this helps.
