Does an air conditioner have an effect on getting a cold? And a question about flu vaccines?
Question:
Answers:
Colds are caused by viruses, mainly rhinovirus and coronavirus. Sleeping under a fan or with the AC on will not cause more of the viruses to enter your system unless there is someone with the virus sneezing into the fan. However, if you sleep with a strong fan blowing directly on you it can give you a sore throat in the morning due to the wind drying out your oral mucosa, but that is not a cold. However, legionnaires disease is a bacteria that grows in air conditioners, but it causes a severe pneumonia in old people that are smokers and drinkers.
Flu shots only contain 3 different strains of influenza viruses, and there are hundreds, so you may have gotten the strains that you were not immunized against.
Other Answers:
Air conditioners have a filter. Snap off the front and wash the filter out in the sink. It could be making you sick.
FreddyBoy1 is right about the filter, could be allergic to dust etc.
About the flu vaccine, you have to understand that the manufacturer is taking a guess a what strains of influenza will be most prevalent when they start giving it. Obviously this is hit and miss. The other thing you have to realize is, just cause you're sick does mean it is something that can be treated or something a MD will treat. The most prevalent causes of what is commonly know as "The Cold" are viruses. And eventhough they are coming out with more antivirals daily they still done cover all viruses.
