What is the purpose of the navel?

Question:

Answers:
It serves no purpose at all. It's a remnant of the umbilical cord. Here's some more info on it from wikipedia:

The umbilicus (commonly called a navel, or belly button) is a scar on the abdomen, caused when the umbilical cord is removed from a newborn baby. All placental mammals have a navel. While it is fairly conspicuous in humans, in most mammals, including cats, it appears only as a thin hairless line.

In humans, the scar can appear as a depression (sometimes colloquially referred to as an "innie") or as a protrusion ("outie"). Although they can easily be separated into 'innie' and 'outie' categories, navels vary quite drastically in terms of size, shape, depth and overall look, between people.

Other Answers:
its from your umbilical cord when you were inside your mommy, its how you were fed

You wouldn't be born if you didn't have one you mean your belly button?(hehe)
well thats where your umbilical chord was attached when you were a fetus inside your mother

umm, it was actually your umbilical cord and it provides all of your nutrition while you are an embryo. No "purpose" It's the "scar" from where the umbilical cord came off.

the umbilical cord that nourished you when you were just a fetus in your mothers womb was connected to you at your navel. you were born it was cut, fell off and now you have a belly button.

it's how babies get their nourishment when they are still inside the womb. The umbilical cord was attached there, and falls off shorty after birth.

It is leftover from the umbilical cord that fed you when you were in the uterus. After you are born, the doctor cuts off the cord, and your body loses the rest of the cord by sealing it off at your navel. After that it has no other purpose other than to keep your guts from spilling. It's a scar left behind when the umbilical cord dries up and falls off after birth. The umbilicus allows for the transfer of oxygen and nutrients from the mother's body to the child's, keeping the child alive until birth.

All of the above are correct.

It's from the umbilical cord which connected you in the womb before you were born. If you do not have a belly button its because you are an alien.

The navel (in humans) is the point at which nutrients from the mother enter the body of a fetus via the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord is severed at birth & the navel remains. After birth, it has no purpose that I am aware of. It was where the umbilical cord was connected to the baby while still in the womb for food and nourishment. Once the baby is born it dosen't need an umbilical cord so they cut it off and what's left is the navel. So really the navel serves no purpose other than prove that the person with it is a mammal and for making people look good in swimsuits.

Along with all the other answers, (I like the swimsuit answer) the navel serves as a place for foreplay - it is a great place for a man to kiss a woman - and, it serves as a great shotglass, like for pouring in a bit of Bailey's or whipped cream or whatever and licking it out. Plus, it is great for jewelry! Also, it is a place to collect extra 'fluff'.

for kissing and tickling. lol
