What could be causing an unexplained fever?

Question:
My 3-Year old has had a fever for almost a week now. The doctor says she can't find anything wrong after a thorough examination. She's sending her for blood work, but I just want to get an idea of what this could possibly be. I'm no good at waiting. Please, only serious responses. Thank You.

Answers:
Actually there is such a diagnosis as FUO. It stands for fever of unknown origen. That is why your Dr. is doing labwork, because there is no obvious cause and he needs to look further to find an answer. Fever is your body's natural way of taking care of itself when there is something foriegn invading. It raises the body temp to kill off bacteria or viruses. If your child is not irritable or uncomfortable don't give Tylenol and let the body do it's job. And depending on how high the fever is, it may not be worth a bunch of invasive testing anyway. Above 101 is usually the giudeline for testing. Your Dr. is just making sure there is no bacterial infection somewhere that needs to be treated. It's hard to just give antibiotics when you don't know what infection you're going after as certian antibiotics kill specific bacteria. But if your child has a high white count- it's bacterial and should be given a broad spectrum antibiotic which will kill just about anything. If your child has a low white blood cell count it's probably a virus and you have to wait it out. Good luck, I hope she feels better soon!

Other Answers:
it could just be a very minor infection somewhere & that's what the blood work can determine.
Scalet fever. Very comomon in young children.
Do you think it's possible she might have salmonella?
could just be a stomach flu or something. Sometimes people just get feverish also, it doesnt have to be anything more than that. A fever can mean just about anything though, you'll just have to wait.
Is she cutting some teeth? When they cut those bigger teeth sometimes that will do it , but it seems like the Dr would have spotted that. Hope everything works out ok.
She could possibly still be teething. Get a second opinion if it persists. Could be a middle ear infection too. Love and hugs, Sheri
That question makes absolutely no sense. If the fever had a cause, then it couldn't be unexplained. Nothing causes an unexplained fever because its unexplained.
An infectiosn or a virus. Virus' tend to run a fever, and can last for as long as two weeks. With a virus also, the only thing you can do is wait them out. Does he have any other symptoms?
Any infection will cause a fever. It is possible that is what it could be.
it could be anything it probably is the lack of white blood cells or a bacteria type that entered through a scrap or some thing hope your child gets better
maybe it is something that she eats that she is allergic too? or maybe something that you have currently around your home. it could also be that maybe she was bitten by a little bug somewhere, and yopu just haven't found it yet. In either case, getting blood work is a great idea, as well is continuing with doctors until this strange fever issue has been resolved> Keep it up, and if one doctor says there's nothing wrong, and if he or she still has the fever, then go to another doctor. These days and times, we must all be very very careful when it comes to our health and the health of our kids and the ones we love.
The answer might be in the blood work. He probably has an infection or virus his body is fighting with that no one is aware of yet. My husband had a similar problem. He held a high fever for a week but didn't have any other symptoms. He ended up being hospitalized because the fever was from his body having no immune system. His white blood cell count dropped to such a low amount that he almost died. The doctors tested him for eveything but nothing came up, it ended up being a virus that he had that he couldn't fight off. I truely hope it is nothing like that for your baby. I hope the blood work comes back clean, if not, hang in there, your child will be okay.
Has your child been around any kittens lately?I know this sounds unreal, but, there is a thing called cat scratch fever. My youngest son caught this from a scratch.Check his or her lymph glands under the jaw like your feeling the tonsils.Just a thought because fever was the only real symptom he had.It took about six weeks to go away.
Having a fever is a way for our bodies to tell us something is going on..but could be minor. You didn't say whether the fever was low-grade or not. However, if the Dr. is having blood work drawn then the only thing you can do is continue to monitor you little one and wait for results. No sense in thinking the worst. You prob would do better to listen to Dr.'s advice and if not satisfied with his then get second opinion.
Well... that is not a very easy question to ask. There are a lot of things that could make a child have a temp. The Dr. probably should have done bloodwork sooner than a week. It also depends on how HIGH the temp. Some things it could be...
Ear infection
Strepthroat
viral infection
pneumonia
Mono
even just her fighting off getting an infection...

I'm sure your giving her tylenol... but if that dosn't take it down you can alternate Motrin in there too. just give as directed and stagger them... Tylenol at 1pm... Motrin at 3pm

I hope I helped a bit
since you have gone for medical check up, i think u should wait. But make sure the baby's temprature is normal. Just wait.
I'm not a doctor, but I do have three kids- 30,21,&14. Some of their fevers were caused by teeth. By that I mean molers trying to cut thru gums. They weren't sick, just very warm. I don't know the temperature your 3 yr old has, so I can't say if there is any real concern. If there is no vomiting or dizziness, or pains anywhere, I would check her teeth. Also, I know infections cause fever, even mild ones. Hope this helped. You might want to try WEB MD.com
Her doctor should be able to find out whats wrong.....get a second opinion.Having fevers for a long period of time can actually cause brain damage, keep her fever down. Does she have even the littlest sign of a cold? Is anything out of the ordinary? Have they done any x-ray's? Blood work and x-rays should be able to show if anythings wrong, if she has even a little cold they will be able to see it in her chest on the x-ray and they will be able to see her sinuses. About 2 months ago my 3 yr old son had a fever off and on for 4 days but didnt complain of anything and the cold he had was gone about 2 days before the fevers started...took him to his pediatrician who couldnt physically see anything causing the fever, so she decided to get an x-ray done of his sinuses and his lower body, turns out he had a sinus infection from the cold that was already gone, but his upper sinuses were clogged...in an x-ray of the sinuses, his whole nose area and even to the sides under his eyes show up white if there is an infection. Do her ears look okay...?my son had ear infections almost every other week starting at 2 months and finally stopped about a year ago..he never showed signs of having an ear infection the only way we could tell is when he would start running a fever.
Fevers mean something is wrong, it's her body telling her something is wrong inside and is a sign of a possible infection. Her doctor should be doing all she can to tell whats wrong, our bodies dont just run fevers for no reason. A blood test should be able to tell if something is wrong or not, it will show what her blood counts are at.If all else fails ask her to just give her a cheap antibiotic and see if that does anything for her.Something is wrong...and taking tylenol for a long period of time on a regular basis is not good for her liver, your paying her doctor....you need to tell her what to do.Or go get a second opinion...there is no way my sons doctor would even let us leave the office until she figured out what was wrong with him...and its not just cuz i work there, she's always been a great doctor to him even before i worked with her....find out whats wrong with your baby, hope she is feeling better soon and she is okay.
