What is a morphine addict?

Question: I am reading the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" for school summer reading, in the book it says there was a sickly old woman who had fits because she was a morphine addict.What is that?

A morphine addict is someone who takes more morphine than they need, or when they don't need it. The body builds up a tolerance, and it thinks it needs more and more. Quite a vicious cycle. But as far as "fits" go. You don't have to be addicted to have hallucinations, extremely bad nightmares, and really bad reactions like that. However if the body is addicted, it will react by causing, tremors, sweating, and even seizures.
