Because it is big business. And being that it is illegal, the prices go up because of supply and demand. Because the normal drug user can't go to Wal Mart on a Saturday evening to pick up his/her value pack of pot, they have to look to other places. A drug dealer knows people want his/her product, and that they may not know another person who deals. As there is no competition on a greater commerce scale (Other then drug wars) the prices are set higher. Making lots of cash tends to make dealers forget about those that the drugs hurt: families of drug users, girlfriends, boyfriends, husband, wives, children, etc.
Money is the root of all that is evil, and drug dealers are no different.

We don't have enough prisons to house them. Most of them are foreign, and they do it for the money. They don't care about legality. They are thugs who want a fast buck.
People make and sell drugs because other people want them. I think drugs should all be made legal and taxed, and the taxes used to pay for the funerals of those who use them. Let's clean up the gene pool.
They do not stop because there is WAY too much money to be made in it. Anything illegal is profitable and anything profitable is going to keep people's attention in doing it.

They don't because they are greedy, rebellious, and generally stupid. The producers can sell drugs for a lot of money to a market that often is addicted to their product.
The drug users start for a number of reasons, ranging from peer pressure to wanting to defy authority to (sometimes) not knowing any better.
It's supply and demand.
As long as there is a demand for drugs there will be suppliers.
As long as there is money to be made they will make it.
