My Doctor Says...?

Question:
That i have Ankylosing Spondylitis. What is this? what does it mean? what is the prognosis? what are the treatment options open to me?

Answers:
It is an immune system disorder, much like arthritis and is treated like arthritis.

I have it. I have had symptoms for close to 20 years, and was diagnosed almost 15 years ago with it.

It is not pleasant.

You will probably be treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, like indocin.

If you ever experiencing eye pain, or clouding over of vision in one or both eyes, go see an opthamologist immediately. Uveitis is common with AS patients, and can lead to permanent impairment of vision if not promptly treated (and sometimes even when it is).

Good luck.

It is a rheumatic disease that causes arthritis of the spine and sacroiliac joints and can cause inflammation of the eyes, lungs, and heart valves.

Surely your doctor explained this to you.
