I used to suffer from chronic insomnia and I found the best thing is to get a strict bedtime routine and stick to it. Don't lie in bed for more than half an hour. If you can't get to sleep, get up, take a walk, or do something non exerting for about ten minutes, then go back to bed. And don't use your bed for anything during the day. It just reinforces the idea that your bed is something to stay awake on.
I sleep better if my room is nice and cool.
