What I use is much simpler and natural than all these medecines:
Very hot water with a big soup spoon of honney. You have to drink it as hot as possible and you will sleep like a baby.
Well, at least it works for me and all my friends I have recommended this to.

When I had a coughing problem I used Nyquil. It tastes nasty I will tell you that but it helps you stop coughing. But warning. It knocks you out so be careful when you use it.
Coughing is the body's way of getting something irritating out of your throat.
If the cough is caused by a virus, like a cold, then ask your pharmacist for a suitable medication. If it's something else, or if there's blood, you should see a doctor first :)
In England we have something called "Night Nurse". It knocks you out for the night and you dont cough at all. I guess it would be a lot like Nyquill in the States.
