my 9 year old son was given dihyrocodeine for hip pain, is it safe to take, not impressed with a and e doctor?

Dihydrocodeine (related to codeine) is in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics. It is used for the relief of pain. I find no indication of toxicity specific to children except those under the age of 2.

If I remember correctly, it is the pain relieving component of some cold medications - Dristan to be specific, I think.
