Brain tumor is usually slow growing and doesn't usually have such a sudden onset of symptoms, but they have to tell you the worst possible scenario to cover themselves. Sounds to me like bacterial encephalitis, or viral meningitis, both of which can be successfully treated. They need time to get tests run to find out exactly what is causing the swelling. Blood tests, CT scans, even MRI, they all take time. He is in the hospital, best place for him because they can support his other systems while they determine what is causing his problem. Don't jump to conclusions, wait and see.

he could have menningitis, which will cause swelling of the brain. It can be treated if bacterial, if viral, then that could be a different situation. I'm sure they will run all the necessary tests as soon as possible, this is not something they are going to dismiss as something minor. Keep asking the doctors, you have a right to the answers.
Does your father drink heavily? I have heard that large amounts of alcohol can do this to a person. Please don't take offense at this answer because none is meant.
If your father has had a fever meningitis is a definate possibilty. He could also have a small aneurysm but would tend to have stroke symptoms with this. Encephalitis is another possibilty. Both the meningitis and encephalitis can be treated with antibiotics as long as they are bacterial and not viral.
