Don't go to the middle east. They use perfume instead of bathing. I've heard that the french do that also. They would rather cover their nasty funky stank with something that (supposedly) smells good.

Many people who smell funky do not do their laundry. That will cause a lot more smell.
The funk comes from bacterial in the moist parts of their clothes.
You can bring the topic to their attention by chatting about doing laundry rather than bathing. Bathing is personal, but doing laundry is just a chore.
So you can start by some good natured complaining about having to do your laundry, blah blah... and then recommending that they do their own.
Which brings up the issue: Do you do your own laundry? Have you benefitted from someone else who has helped you maintain your personal hygiene?
That person may not have a washer. They may live in a house where bathing and laundry are just a big hassle because of plumbing issues and mental illness of a parent.
