I've given up too many times. I'm always giving up. What should I do?

Question:
This is actually a counseling question.

Answers:
You've established a behavior pattern. Your pattern is when you encounter adversity, challenges, problems, roadblocks, etc., you quit. You have convinced yourself that when this happens, you can't succeed, so you stop trying. It's the easy way out, since you don't have to keep working to achieve your goal. Obviously, quitting makes success impossible, making your choice seem valid.

Behavior patterns are very hard to change, but people do change them all the time. Behavior patterns are automatic ways of behaving that are learned over time. Actually, they are imbedded in the neurons. That is, brain cells in the cortex have grown together to form neural pathways that direct the automatic behavior. That's why they are so hard to change.

The only way to do that is to establish a new neural pathway that involves not giving up - determination, persistence, perseverance, whatever you want to call it. The next time the going gets rough, do something different - keep trying. Don't give up. Millions of people approach life this way and are rewarded with ultimate success. If you do this and experience success, you'll be well on your way to establishing a new pattern. Consistent repetition of the new pattern is what will make the neurons form a new pathway. Striving will seem easier with each triumph, small or large. It may take months or years of trying, but you can change. Of course, that kind of "stick-to-it-ness" isn't your current strength, so you have your work cut out for you.

Good luck.
