What are physical requirements for LPN?

Question:
VA Representative indicates I may have disqualifying phsical deficiency problems that would aggravate present VA Disabilities of PTSD, Ringing In Ears, and Diabetes that is controled by diet. All I'm trying to do is go to LPN School, graduate and go to work, Im 65 yrs. old, slower. I guess I could be in better shape. I just completed MA (900)hrs. What the heck is the difference? Retired HMCM. I love helping people.....

Answers:
LPNs do hands on pt care, how much heavy lifting depends on which unit you work (an LPN in Post Partum would do less lifting then an LPN on Med Surg or DOU). You can expect to change soiled pts, assist pts to the restroom, turn pts etc. Some facilities employ CNAs to do the bulk of pt care, but you should still expect to do this on your own.

An MA will facilitate office duties, charting, vital signs, weigh pt, pt history, change wound dressing & obtain wound cultures, pt education, perform CPR and render first aid (if certified), process insurance claims. Though they are trained in phlebotomy, EKG and Xray some states require sperate certification to perform certain tasks. I believe MAs can also give injections.

An LPN/LVN can do all of the above. Duties also include starting and maintaining IV sites (if certified), blood and blood products administration, phlebotomy (if certified), insertion of catheters, telephone/verbal orders from a physician, perform hemodialysis, administer meds via hep lock, administer oral meds, sublingual meds, topical meds, suppositories, injections, feeding tubes, chest tubes, trachs and other basic nursing care.

Hope this helps, good luck!!
