my l-5 was ruptured and my s-1 was herniated. the procedure performed on me is called a lumbar discectomy where both disc were removed and my spine was fused back together. after my surgery, i returned to work part-time 10 days after the surgery and full- time after 45 days

Have had 5 neck surgery's from ruptures there and I am telling you now it takes a very good year of healing.If you have a choise do not use ur bone from the hip to fix the rupture use the bone bank.that hurt so bad that if I had been close to a gun I may have used it !! If you smoke stop.! Healing takes a lot longer I just had My 5th surgery In Feb 05 and went in to have it cked ,because of headaches and electric currents going down my arms and it never healed .so I get to go back under the knive.The Dr Said that the smoking had alot to do with IT !!

Avoid surgery if you can. I know too many people who've had the surgery and are worse now. One lady got a bone infection after the surgery. After six months, she can finally walk without pain but cannot run yet like she wants to.
My boyfriend had a ruptured disk years ago and decided not to have the surgery. He says you have to live with the pain for awhile and work on strengthening your back muscles. He runs a lot of miles, even doing ultras and his back does not bother him.
