I had my 18 week pregnancy sonogram. Results said the babies kidneys were enlarged. How serious is this?

Did your doctor act like it was something you should be concerned about?
The same thing happened with one of my sons. The ultrasound showed that one of his kidneys was enlarged. We had several follow up ultrasounds after that to see if it resolved itself, but unfortunately it never did.
At least in our case it was something called hydronephrosis. I guess it is where, somewhere during development, the ureter (the tube leading to the kidney) developed a kink in it. This ultimately ended up damaging my son's kidney, but often it can be repaired in surgery after the baby is born.
Hopefully they will do a follow-up ultrasound for you & everything will be OK. The good news for you is that since you have had an ultrasound, you will be aware of any possible condition, so that they can treat your baby after his/her birth.
With my son, they did different tests to see how well his kidneys functioned after he was born, and also gave him antibiotics for a year to make sure that he didn't develop a urinary tract infection, which could ultimately cause more damage to his kidneys. They were going to do surgery to fix the kink that they thought existed, but unfortunately in our case the damage to his kidney couldn't be fixed.
I certainly don't want to scare you, because worrying your whole pregnancy won't do you any good either. I'll pray that your next ultrasound shows that everything is fine :)

The best answer will come from your doctor. He/she knows your particulars. This can be too serious of a question to leave to the internet.
oh my God I am so sorry!!
At eighteen weeks, I wouldn't worry about it too much. When you go in for your next sonogram. Wait to see if anything has changed, if not, ask your doctor for details on it. He is responsible for knowing what is going on and he is the one you should ask your questions too.
didn't your doctor tell you this when he said *the kidneys are enlarged*? Why didn't you ask him??
You would probably be best to talk to your doctor but my son (who will be 2 in a couple of months) had the same thing when I was pregnant. The doctor said that if the baby had to pee at the time, it could appear enlarged and that wouldn't be anything to worry about. The alternative was a possible blockage allowing the kidney(s) to swell (or something like that). Anyway, there were more tests and ultrasounds and when the baby was born, more tests and in the long run, it was nothing and all is good. I think it was because my age, they were looking for anything and everything that could be wrong and so end up focusing on tiny, little things that end up being nothing. At least, in my case it was all good in the end. My point is, don't panic, talk to your doctor. Good luck.
