is marijuana addictive?
Question:
Answers:
At one time, it was thought that marijuana was not addictive, but
now we know that it is. In a recent study of chronic users users, "Nearly two-thirds of the participants reported experiencing four or more symptoms of marijuana withdrawal, including anxiety, aggression, and irritability. More than one-third of participants reported four or more symptoms that occurred at a moderate or greater severity level."
In another study, symptoms were "pronounced for the first 10 days of the study. Increases in irritability and physical tension were observed in chronic users for all 28 days of abstinence.
Also, if, for some people, marijuana isn't physically addictive, people can form a psychological dependence on it that can be hard to break.
It's also believed that at least some people who start using marijuana, also tend to start using other stronger substances, which are in fact addictive. So, you might also want to double check that your fiance isn't also inclined to use other drugs as well.
If your fiance is having a hard time with withdrawal symptoms, you can look in the phonebook for a substance abuse treatment program that can help him get through it.
I hope that your fiance's drug use doesn't hurt your future life together. Good luck!

He has a psychological addiction. He has convinced himself he needs it, but it doesn't set up a craving like heroin does.

Marijuana itself is not addictive, but some people have an addictive personality in which they are simply addicted to being in an altered state. So his 'bad feeling' would most likely go away with drinking or another kind of drug, if he is telling the truth. Perhaps he has just told you this if you are nagging him about smoking the marijuana??I guess we'd need more details to be sure.
Course it is. It is also bad for health and wellbeing. Tell your fiance to quit or get dumped. Marijuana is like any other illegal drug, thus said, yes it is addictive.
"No one would argue that marijuana is as addictive as alcohol or cocaine. However, it's wrong to say that it is not at all addictive. More and more studies are finding that marijuana has addictive properties. Both animal and human studies show physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms from marijuana, including irritability, restlessness, insomnia, nausea and intense dreams. Tolerance to marijuana also builds up rapidly. Heavy users need 8 times higher doses to get the same effects as infrequent users.
For a small percentage of people who use it, marijuana can be highly addictive. It is estimated that 10% to 14% of users will become heavily dependent. More than 120,000 people in the US seek treatment for marijuana addiction every year. Because the consequences of marijuana use can be subtle and insidious, it is more difficult to recognize signs of addiction. Cultural and societal beliefs that marijuana cannot be addictive make it less likely for people to seek help or to get support for quitting."
