I had no idea what it was until I googled it a few minutes ago. There are specific exercises and you should ask the doctor about that first. Don't go rushing for surgery until you have tried doing them for a few months and see if that helps. Learn everything you can first and judge for yourself if you really need the surgery. If you should decide on that, shop around for a good surgeon and get second and third opinions if you can afford them.
Now comes the personal or not so personal story.
My best friend was doing wake boarding for a couple of years before she finally went to the doctor because she always ended up in pain. After one particular day, she hurt herself and ended up in the emergency room. They refered her to an orthopedic surgeon.. He told her that she needed surgery as it was congenital and that if she wanted to continue doing her 'normal' weekend activities, she should get it 'shaved'.
Well, she went for the surgery. After recuperation and going twice weekly for her physiotherapy she was still in pain, post surgery. To make a very long story short, she is suing the surgeon and it's an on-going case. She's have had two other surgeries, and as it turned out, her surgeon had cut off her nerves of that particular leg! And horrors of horrors, they can't repair the damage and she's losing the use of her leg. They have told her that she will end up in a wheelchair! So, be very careful of your decision and I wish you all the best.
Good Luck.
How come every time I cut my leg with a chainsaw?

Anytime you go under the knife there is a risk/chance you'll be taking. But, if it gets too bad and nothing else seems to work, then maybe surgery will help, but no guarantee.
I am familiar with this condition. It is a degenerative condition to correct this you can basically have the underside of the knee cap sanded. Ask an orthopedic surgeon how they perform this procedure. What is the recoup time? How long off your feet? What percentage will have it return? Only the Ortho you see will be able to tell you about the way he/she does the procedure
