The most modern model of psychiatric disorders is is called the diathesis-stress model. Despite a technical name, it is pretty simple. Illnesses like depression result from an interaction between one's environment and an inherited predisposition. You aren't born with depression or bipolar disorder, but you may have a tendency toward them. Stress can trigger full blown psychiatric illness. Personally, I think the reason mental illnesses are so prevalent is that American psychiatrists and psychologists are more quick to diagnose them.
