What is with the general public fear of germs?

Question:
I ask this because I remember my biology classes in high school. Your Immune system I will illicit an antibody response when you get sick, and those antibodies can stay in your system for upwards of a decade. I also remember that getting sick will save your life, as it cleans out your entire system due to a massive immune response.
If you stay healthy by getting sick, why try to prevent it?

Answers:
Although you're right about the immune response, I try to prevent getting sick because the immune response involves feeling awful for days with fever and stuffy head and running nose and general soreness. I'd rather avoid that as much as possible. I know I can't avoid it altogether so I figure the few times I do get sick is enough of an immune response to keep things working. I just don't want to go through it a lot...a couple of times a year is plenty.
bc there's ppl like hypochondriacs
