If you can’t fall asleep or stay asleep
Lying in bed awake can make you feel anxious and even less likely to fall asleep. If you can’t get to sleep within 15 or 20 minutes after you go to bed, or if you wake up in the night and can’t get back to sleep, get up and do something relaxing. It can help to
• Read something light or listen to soothing music in another room. To avoid over-stimulating yourself, keep the lights low.
• Drink a cup of warm milk. Research shows that milk contains an amino acid that may help you get to sleep. And the acts of heating the milk and drinking it slowly in a dim room can help you feel relaxed and sleepy.
• Write it down. If something stressful is keeping you awake, try unburdening your mind by writing it down. Some people find it helps to simply describe how they feel. Others find it helps to make a list of the things they’re worried about or that they need to do.
• Do deep-breathing or other relaxation exercises. Try inhaling as you count to five slowly, and exhaling as you reverse the count. Some people find it helpful to relax each part of their body in succession, starting with the right foot, right leg, right shoulder, right hand, and so on back down the left side.
lots of carbs, bread, etc.
exercise is also very good if you do it earlier in the day.

i answered this for someone else before and it really helped them.
Nothing you can do that late, but excersize during the day will help you sleep A LOT BETTER at night.

other then that, just try to relax, maybe try to read.
Melatonin. Start at 1 mg and work your way up. It works trust me!!! There is always good ole tylenol PM too, but that has a tendency to make one drowsy and groggy in the morning, or in my case the night. Melatonin is a natural hormone in your body that is used to regulate sleep cycles, so it is alot better for you.
zzz... drink a lot of... hmmm... beer... zzz...
do body tiring excersizes, hun.

ie. while lying down, tighten you toes for 5 seconds, and the release.then tighten your whole foot for 5 seconds, then relax. then move up to your calf, ect. after you've done your whole body, do all of it at once 3 times and you should be plenty relaxed.
Warm milk works. But I must tell you about three new medications that are NOT habit-forming, and they help you fall asleep safely. Get to your doctor, and ask for Ambien CR, Lunesta, or Rezerem. Good luck!! :)
dont eat carbs that is energy and that is what keeps you awake eat well before bed then do some thing that bores the crap out of you like so bad that you rather just sleep than do that.
Try chamomile or lavender teas. Chamomile you can get at most grocery stores.

Put some hops in a little cloth baggie, put it between your pillow and pillow case. it stinks to high heavens, but it works. A drop of lavender oil near your nose could help too.

Turn your mind off, read an absolute boring book.

Oh and soaking your feet in cold water in the tub or sink is good too. Cover the feet completely. That is duo advantage it helps keep you cool long enough to go to sleep usually.
I think the way one falls asleep- is genetic. It takes ME awhile too... And unless I'm REALLY tired (but NOT overtired), there's nothing I can do to help me fall asleep in less than half an hour. It just DOESN'T happen. ... Now my Girlfriend (and ALL of her 7 sisters), can actually be SNORING within 60 seconds after her head hits thev pillow! NO kidding (I've timed it). When her eyes go SHUT- her lights go OUT. -It's one of the FEW things I envy about her. So, - WELCOME to the club! :)
If you mean once your in bed you find your mind wandering and you want to "calm it to sleep", then perhaps you can try counting back at a steady pace from 500 to 0. Essentially, the human mind is a jitterbug and by forcing it to focus on one thing, you calm it down. You need to keep it busy enough not to think about stuff, yet not too busy that it has to try too hard. Tricky.

If you mean you want to get tired so you feel like getting into bed...sheesh...drink tea, read a book, have a hot shower...the list is endless. Just do something quiet and calming. Dont watch TV (although it works for some) as the barage of information keeps the mind ticking over.
There are available mp3s on the internet that produce white noise. With white noise, it provides a sense of relaxation. You can fall asleep in a matter of minutes.
Avoid caffeine during the day/
