How bad is a 3mm kidney stone?
Question:
I'm just wondering how long it usually takes to pass a stone of that size and I'm curious as to how badly it will hurt ;P the doc said it was small so it should just be uncomfortable at the worst, but I've heard (and read) of some horror stories..haha
thanks!
Answers:
Most kidney stones of that small size will pass out naturally but not always. If it is not passed whilst it is small it is likely to grow.
Most kidney stones are caused by too much acidity so an alkaline diet will very gradually dissolve such stones but this takes a long time.
All kidney stones are bad, and painfull
its gonna hurt like a *****
Kidney stones can be very painful and sometimes not. It doesn't matter on the size it all depends it it is really jagged or if it is a smoother stone. I know I have had really tiny ones hurt worse then the bigger ones. It all depends on the stone itself and how rough it is.
Well, first of all, I feel for ya! I have had a few over the years and most have been the same size as yours. Two have been r-e-a-l-l-y painful (emergency room, demarol, ahhhhhh) but the others passed with no pain.
Mine have been shaped like little comets, so if they pass "head first" its no problem, but if they head down with the tail leading the way ... ouch!

If you start feeling nausea and throw up, that is a good indicator the stone is close to or has already passed. They aren't fun, and could take several weeks to pass on their own if you don't have surgery, but a 3mm stone isn't worth having surgery on. Keep drinking water and cranberry juice. It will probably take slightly longer if you're a guy LOL You'll have anywhere from 3 - 7 more inches than us females do LOL! Best wishes =)
