Answers:
I have "severe" scoliosis.

I was 16 when I had a posterior/anterior spinal fusion, and I am 29 now.

I am glad I had the surgery. I now have 2 titanium rods in my back, and I do have occasional back pain (it was much worse before the surgery...) but the pain is not bad, and it's not too often.

Good luck, and email me if you have any other questions.

I live a relatively normal life. I go snow skiing, I ride jet skis, I go on roller coasters, etc. It worked out good for me.

My surgery was around 14 hours. The week following the surgery, from what I remember, was torture. The surgery was very sucessful... but it is MAJOR surgery.

I remember waking in ICU on a ventilator... so I could not breath when I wanted to, I breathed when the machine wanted me to... I remember being tied down to the gernie because as I was waking up I was moving and struggling a little. I remember the chest tube on my right side, the tube up my nose and down my throat, which give me the worse sore throat of my life. I remember the horrified look on peoples face, as they looked at me. I also remember two good looking female nurses removing the catheter...

I was out of ICU and in a normal room in 3-4 days. I remember on the 4th day being forced out of bed, and forced to walk... then I was out of the hospital on day 7. walking with a walker for 2 weeks and then on my own after that. Within 30 days from the date of surgery things were back to normal for the most part. (taking the staples out hurt too)

So... be prepared that surgery is rough... very rough. I think I used 20 grand worth of pain medicine... but for me, it was worth it. I have not been to a back doctor in a few years, but I am pretty sure my worse curve was around 71%. I had a "C" in the middle of my back... a sharp left, then a right, then a left... and the curve is still there, they fused it and put in the rods. My actual vertabre are a bit deformed, wedge-shaped.

So, back to your sister... if she is in a lot of pain, surgery might be the only answer. Its a She could try a back brace... I did, but it did not really help too much.
