Questions about depth perception?

Question:
So, yesterday I had my regular eye check, and I was almost done when the doctor/scientist guy said I had the best set of eye he seen in a long time. But here came the depth perception, where I had to wear special and look at a couple of transparent set of pages. 1-10 had three circles and I had to chose which stands out; but I only could to go 4 which he said its really below average. To me, I see perfectly normal. Is their an alternate to this test, and what is depth perception retail to in real life. Last, is there any way to help improve this problem.

Answers:
Depth perception relates to your ability to perceive how distant one object is relative to another -- in other words, your ability to determine how far away something is. This type of information is particularly important when driving or performing surgery -- things of that nature.

I'm not aware of any alternate tests, but they can be pretty easy to devise right at home.
I just went to the eye doctor today, I have optic neuritis and have lost vision in my left eye. I took the same test today. I could only make out the first set of circles, I couldn't tell with any of the others. When I light a cigarette I notice the gap in depth perception the most, I don't know where to put the lighter, this also happened when I tried to put toothpaste on my toothbrush this morning. It seems to bother me when something is up close, but I don't notice it with things far away. I don't know how you would improve it.
