Why are most of my dreams night mirrors?

Question:
every single night for the past 2-3 years I've been having terrible night mirrors and I'm just tired of it . I wake up at about 4 in the morning everyday scared to death because my dream was so bad . and my dreams always involve death and demented things , its really sick . Do i need to see a phyciatrist for this because in normal life I'm fine , but as soon as i get to sleep i have terrible dreams . One was about someone breaking in and killing my girlfriend right in front of me . and thats only a mild version of it . i know you might say that this might not be a big deal but it is , i cant Handel it anymore , its effecting how much i sleep and when i do , its just crazy . and i just want to say no , i don't watch alot of scary movies or read alot of scary stories . all of these dreams seem to be made up by me !

Answers:
Dreams and nightmares are just your conscience trying to work something out that you are not willing to or ready to do yet.

Put a note book and pencil next to your bed. As soon as you awaken from a bad dream, write down any key words, ideas or images. Then go back to sleep. Do this every time you awaken for a week or so. As long as you are getting 'new' information.

When you are getting the same 'messages' each night. Look through your notebook. What is this all about? Usually it is some loss, I would think that as your dreams involve death, you are unhappy with the way things are now. You feel unfulfilled and have lost your direction in life. It depends on how your girlfriend is being killed. Usually this is with a gun or stabbed. These are usually sexual, the release from the violent act, sexual frustration, so make love to your lady before you go to sleep. Get rid of the frustration. The loss of your girlfriend may also be that you feel insecure.

However it may just be that you have actually lost the person in real life (ie they died) and then this is part of the grieving process. Long explanation, but basically if it is grief that you have not dealt with, then you will have to deal with it enough to stop the dreams.

Dreams and nightmares are only trying to tell you what you need to know. Deal with the information. Do not ignore it and the dreams should stop naturally.

If the dreams are really bad then: One technique is to practice when you are awake at stopping the dreams. This takes some practice. It has to be automatic. So think of a place where you feel really safe in real life.

If you can go there. Take photos, spend time, sitting in that place. Smell it. Feel it, remember it. Go back with someone who makes you feel safe. Do the same again. Finally go back on your own. If it is at all possible go at a quiet time and practice saying aloud STOP DREAMING YOU ARE SAFE over and over again.

For a couple of days practice saying Stop Dreaming You are Safe in your mind. Wherever you are. Chant it in your mind. Then look at the photos and think about being with your safe person in your safe place. It may take a few attempts before you can do this in your sleep.

A friend who is an educational psychologist taught me this. I have never found any research on it, or anything to say it is medically proved, but It has worked for people I have worked with. It may for you.

Deal with the issues. In the meantime, use the STOP Dreaming Technique just to get a good night's sleep so you can deal with the issues properly. May you have sweet dreams tonight.
Do you watch the news? It's worse than horror books and movies, because it is real! I went through a phase years ago during which I began having some seriously scary dreams, too. At the time, I did used to watch horror movies and read lots of Stephen King, etc. I used to laugh at the movies and say they didn't bother me, but then obviously my dreams told me otherwise.

I've cut out all the scary movies, book, and even the news. If something really big happens, I inevitably hear about it and can research it online, but otherwise, I don't see a whole lot of good in hearing about all the horrible things going on in our country. Of course this is a personal decision, and you may not agree- but it might be worth a shot.

Good luck, and I hope you get some good sleep soon!!
Do you mean night terrors? I would definatly suggest seeing a doctor. If this was only a once in a while I wouldn't worry about it but it seems worse than that. I don't think you are crazy but I do think that you have issues that you need to deal with. Your dreams are just a symptom of a bigger problem, seek professional help.
Below is a great website that can help you understand sleeping disorders and terrors.
I don't know, but when you find out, let me know. I'm the same way.

I have, however, heard of a disease where you have nightmares, but I don't think that sounds logically possible.
