What is.......?

Question:
What is the white stuff under the fingernails at the bottom of the fingernail? It's been bugging me for a long time. Someone told me it was calcium deposits but I don't know!! What is it?

Answers:
If you mean the moons under the nails at the base, they are a color variation in the nail. It is said to be an indication of how good your circulation is. No moons means your circulation is poor. If you mean the stuff on the skin over the base, that's a cuticle, just dead skin that builds up at the base and can be removed by soaking and cleaning with an orange stick.
idk thats a good question
??white dirt?
you mean that half moon looking white stuff at the bottom? it's a new fingernail. guess it's there on reserve incase you lose one. happened to me when i was a kid.
It can be caused by trauma to the nails or calcuim deposits as you stated!!
i've been told that it's calcium deposits, and that it's from too much sugar :) (which would make sence cuz i've gotten them)
Nail plate – this is the part you see when you look at your fingers, the most visible part of the nail.
Nail folds – the skin that frames and supports the nails on three sides.
Nail bed – the skin found beneath the nail plate.
Cuticle – the tissue that overlaps the nail plate at the base of the nail.
Lunula – the whitish half-moon shape found at the base of the nail.
Matrix – the part of the nail hidden under the cuticle.
