Should we really care about adult atheletes that make a concious decision to abuse their bodies using steriods
Question:
Answers:
No, we shouldn't care, but they'd have to make two classifications in sports: steroid users & non steroid users so it would be fair. Otherwise, it's basically cheating and that's why it's a problem. Health-wise, it doesn't matter 'cause it's their body.
Its not their health that people care about, its whether they should be recognized as achieving things that non-enhancement people didn't, and the unfair advantage they get from them.
We should if the use of steroids gives them an advantage they wouldn't have otherwise.
no-I believe in individual responsibility. Make your decisions and enjoy/suffer the consequences!
No. We should not care. They are adults and it is their business. Doubtless, they are aware of the potential side-effects of steroid use, and if they feel that glory now is worth a shorter or more complicated life later, then that should be their choice. I think a great deal of the uproar is because children look up to athletes, and the world doesn't want children to know that their idols are using drugs. Too bad. Athletes use steriods. Pretending that they are bad because they do it a lot of bull. If it were my career, I'd want to be the best I could be and enjoy life while I was able to live it to my absolute potential, with or without enhancements.
Absolutely we should. I care nothing for the actual athlete that abuses their body through steriods, but I do care for the sport that suffers the ramifications and eventually, the consumers that power that sport. When atheletes use steroids, they bloat the record books of that sport and change the game entirely. Take baseball for example: in the 1980s when steroid use was rampant, the game changed into a sport obsessed with hitting the long ball. Now, fans go the ballpark expecting to see several crowd-pleasing homeruns and don't respect when a team manufactures a run through precise hits and sacrifices. Furthermore, the atheletes that use steriods change the play of the game and bloat the record books in their favor only to leave the records that they own tainted - look at what Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds have done to homerun records. The single-season record may be lost, but I can't wait for A-Rod to get to the point where he is competing for the career total just so that he can start pushing Barry Bonds back down the list. Overall, I care nothing for the atheletes that make this decision - their health is their concern - but I care greatly for the sports that they taint.
It's not just what they do to the body. Steroids affect the brain with long term use. The brain is a muscle and it hardens. This causes brain damage and results in mood swings and delusions of grandure. The person taking them may not realize they have changed, but it can be scary to others.
Drugs are Drugs:
"It makes me bigger and more aggressive" - Steroids
"It helps me and my boring friends laugh and be creative" - Pot
"It makes me forget about my bills and divorce" - Opium
"It helps me stay up and get more done" - Meth
"It helps me be confident and alert" - Coke
What ever the excuse, it's just an excuse. A pro-athlete does his job for the public. The public pays his salary. And he holds a higher responsibility to refrain from substance abuse.
