Nausea...is this a stomach bug?

For about a week, I have been nauseous on and off...I know that I'm not pregnant, because I'm not sexually active. Sometimes it goes away if I drink GingerAle...it usually doesn't last too long. It always feels like I have to burp. My Mom thinks it might be a stomach bug...any ideas? Has anyone had symptoms like this before and if so..do they go away?

Try sipping a little bit of water at a time, if you cant drink water you can try sipping on ice chips. Also eat some saltine crackers as that will help absorb the acid in your stomach and help with your nausea. You can take emetrol or some nausea medicine availible from walmart/kroger/albertsons, etc. Also you can try to put a cool washcloth on your forhead or over your throat.

By stomach, do you mean specifically the stomach, or the general abdomen? By the description of the sensation of needing to burp, it sounds like the actual stomach, so I'll go from there.

For example, your lower esophageal sphincter might not work right, so you can't easily release the gas. Are you able to burp after the ginger ale? If so, you might be swallowing a lot of air when you eat, drink or chew gum. If this sounds like the problem, try some peppermints. The mint actually relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, making it easier to burp. This is one reason why after-dinner mints are so popular.

You also could have a bona fide stomach problem. It could literally be a stomach bug - an infection of the stomach. This would generate gas when the bacteria ferment food you eat, and might cause the nausea. A doctor can help you determine this. The treatment would be a brief course of antibiotics. You would want to be sure this is not an H. pylori infection, which eventually might cause ulcers (not everyone infected with H. pylori gets ulcers, so don't worry too much).

Or, you might have trouble emptying the stomach after a meal, or perhaps the meal empties from your stomach too quickly, resulting in gas buildup and nausea. If this is the case, your symptoms would be lower in the abdomen, below the stomach (the stomach is behind and slightly below the left ribs). Again, a doctor will help you determine if this is a problem.

Try the peppermints and see if you get some relief. If not, and the problem persists for another week, see a gastroenterologist (stomach/intestine doctor) for a more thorough workup.
