i call it a juanete---that's bunion in spanish---they're usually found on the side of the foot and can cause problems in old age.
A bunion (hallux valgus) is an enlargement of bone or tissue around the joint at the base of the big toe (metatarsophalangeal joint). If you have a bunion, you will notice a bump on your big toe joint. The big toe may turn in toward the second toe (displacement), and the tissues surrounding the joint may be swollen and tender.
Bunions may be caused by foot mechanics that result in too much pressure on the big toe joint. An abnormal foot motion (excessive pronation), flat feet, and tight-fitting shoes may all contribute to the pressure. Over time, the constant pressure forces the big toe out of alignment, gradually bending it toward the other toes. An inherited foot type is also a factor in the formation of bunions.
A bunionette, or tailor's bunion, is one that develops at the base of the little toe. When the long bone that connects to the toe (metatarsal) bends away from the foot, the little toe bends inward and the joint swells or enlarges.
Currently, no strong medical evidence points to the best treatment for bunions. In most cases, bunions can be treated at home. Nonsurgical treatment includes taking medication to relieve toe pain, wearing shoes that do not hurt your feet (for example, avoiding high heels or narrow shoes), wearing pads to cushion the bunion, and in some cases, using custom shoe inserts (orthotics).
Surgery to correct a bunion may be considered if other treatment does not relieve pain. There are many different types of surgery for bunions. The type of surgery used depends on the specific type of problem found in the toe bones and soft tissue.
dont sound so freaked out---it's nothing contagious or something you'll die from. I have 1. but it's not bothersome.
oh you'll know.the bone by your big toe sticks way out to where regular shoes don't fit over it normally
Bunion. On the side of the big toe, it kind of sticks out.
I have one on the side of my Left foot, and at the doctors today I was told that it can be removed. A Bunion is basically a part of the bone that grows out the wrong way. it isn't life threatening, however it can make getting a shoe to fit, hard to do and painful.
It is basically paraelle to the Big toe on the inside of your foot.
it sticks out and can be very small or can grow very large. If you think you might have one, mention it to your doctor and they will tell you what you need to do to address it.
And you do not have to be OLD to have these as someone else here said. You can get these at any age.
